Short description of the organisation
NTNU has worked with China on cultural heritage and urban regeneration for 25 years (research, innovation and education), and opened its office in Brussels in 2015. NTNU has good relations with industry and paves the way for start-up companies and entrepreneurs, supported by the NTNU Technology Transfer Office in obtaining financing, ensuring relevant patent protection, developing ideas (often with the aid of prototyping), performing market analyses, establishing new companies and negotiating licence agreements. The university uses its main scientific profile in technology and the natural sciences and its cross-disciplinary competency to meet global challenges, summarized by its vision: Knowledge for a better world. Three out of four Strategic Research Areas at NTNU – Sustainability, Energy and Health – contribute directly to sustainable urbanisation, delivering creative innovations with far-reaching social and economic impact in close collaboration with cities, industries, authorities and civil society. NTNU is one of the largest universities in the Nordic countries, with 14 faculties, 70 departments and divisions, 6700 staff and 39000 students.
Key Staff in URBAN-EU-CHINA
Prof. Dr. Annemie WYCKMANS is Project Coordinator on behalf of NTNU. She is Professor, architect and trained facilitator of interdisciplinary and intercultural teams. She is the Head of the NTNU Smart Sustainable Cities group. She has ample experience from international collaboration projects with cities, industry and research (e.g. FP7 RAMSES, ZenN), coordinates the Joint Programme on Smart Cities in the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA JP Smart Cities), and leads/has created several projects, partnerships and summer schools with Chinese partners. Dr. Yu WANG (male) is Assistant Coordinator in URBAN-EU-CHINA. He holds a PhD in Urban Planning, is a Chinese expert on sustainable urbanisation and is China Liaison Officer at the NTNU Faculty of Architecture and Design. He ensures effective communication and common understanding between European and Chinese partners through day-to-day communication and updates with the Chinese and European partners. In this way he is able to swiftly identify new opportunities and potential errors, and make sure all partners share a common understanding of the objectives and tasks at hand. Wang.yu@ntnu.no
Prof. Manfred HORVAT (male) is Adjunct Professor at NTNU, and independent expert for national and international research and technology policies, programmes and instruments and their evaluation and impact assessment. He is honorary professor at TU Wien. Since the beginning of the 1990s, he has been member of several programme committees for European education and RTD programmes and acted as expert for STI policies and programmes advising governments and international bodies. He served as member and chairman of many expert panels appointed by the European Commission for the evaluation and impact assessment of EU programmes and instruments. He was one of the reviewers of the Science and Technology Agreements between the EU and China. Currently he chairs the Horizon 2020 Advisory Group for International Cooperation and is member of the Advisory Groups for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and for Gender. He is one of the two external experts for the OECD Innovation Policy Review for Kazakhstan and is senior advisor for international S&T cooperation of JPI Urban Europe with the special assignment for the outreach to China.
